Jumanji takes the Wreck It Ralph approach. Movie adaptations of games often want to distance themselves as far from the games as possible, while video game adaptations of movies want to replicate the film experience as closely as possible. A straight adaptation is less interesting because it relies so much on our preconceived notions of the character Indiana Jones and, perhaps just as importantly, the actor Harrison Ford.Īdapting Uncharted back into a film would be just as precarious, because we have our notions of what the game is supposed to be and the movie would, almost without doubt, ditch much of what made the games what they are in order to be more of a second-rate Indiana Jones film. The similarities are there, but developer Naughty Dog did its own thing with the story and traded a bull-whip for a bunch of climbing segments. For instance, Uncharted is a direct homage to Indiana Jones, but it doesn't try to be Indiana Jones. Still, like Wreck It Ralph, the best video games about movies don't directly use a popular license.
